Kumarakom lies 14 kms from Kottayam, a cluster of tiny islands on the Vembanad Lake is a famous destination for backwater tourism in Kerala. The salubrious climate, lush greenery with coconut palms and mangroves and the all-pervading presence of water everywhere has a mesmerizing effect. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary will be a delight for the bird watcher and the tourist alike. This 14 - acre Bird Sanctuary is located on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake. The common dwellers here are the waterfowl, ducks, cuckoos and wild ducks. If you are lucky you will chance upon a Siberian Crane, a special visitor during the migratory season.

Kumarakom is blessed with dense mangroves, coconut trees, and greenery all round. It’s hard to resist the romance of spending a few days in the backwaters whilst enjoying the company of your loved one on a floating houseboat. A birdwatcher’s paradise, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a habitat for several migratory birds and is situated on the banks of the radiant Vembanad Lake. This sanctuary is covered in rich greenery and is home to birds such as the Siberian Crane, Egret, Heron, Water-Fowl, Ducks, Moorhens and Kingfishers.
