Ramlila of Varanasi is a popular enactment of the mythological epic, Ramayana. Ram Leela celebration forms an integral part of the cultural life of the Hindi-speaking belt of North India. It is believed that the great saint Tulsidas started the tradition of Ram Lila, the enactment of the story of Lord Ram. The Ramcharitamanas, written by him, forms the basis of Ram Lila performances till today. The Ramnagar Ram Leela (at Varanasi) is enacted in the most traditional style. This special Ram Leela of Ramnagar lasts for almost one month. Ram Leela of Ramnagar was started in the first quarter of the nineteenth century by the then Maharaja of Benaras, Udit Narayan Singh. Hundreds of Sadhus called the 'Ramayanis' come to watch and recite the Ramayana.
Ramnagar, on the bank of the Ganga river opposite from Varanasi, is known for its old fort that belonged to the rulers of Varanasi. While Ramlila, the enactment of the epic Ramayana, is held in many places in India, the best place to enjoy it is in Ramnagar. It is a people’s theatre indeed. Stages are set up all over the town to represent various venues associated with the epic. The actors move from one venue to the other and the spectators follow in their wake. It is interesting to watch the various episodes with the actors interpreting the Ramayana and its dialogues in their own way, and the subtle influence of modern theatre on folk plays. The month-long festival begins on Anant Chaturdashi (September 15, 2016). While there, do not miss the museum inside the fort. Ramnagar is about 15km by road from Varanasi.
Ramnagar Ramlila - Dates and Season
The Ramlila at Ramnagar is unique in almost every right. While most Ramlila adaptations happen throughout ten days, the one at Ramnagar is spread out over 31 days. The most recent edition of the festival took even longer as a result of the actors, all under 18 years of age, fell ill. It was held throughout October and September 2018.
Venue of Ramnagar Ramlila
Since the 1830s the city of Ramnagar, in Uttar Pradesh has played host to the Ramlila. The hallmark of the Ramlila performed here is that it involves the whole city. The various locations of the epic, Ayodhya, Lanka, and Ashok Vatika are different locations spread throughout the city. As the narrative shifts from one location to the next, so too the audience follows behind through the ancient city streets.
Uttar Pradesh has been traditionally celebrating various festivals of several religions with much enthusiasm Holi is one of their main festivals and continues for 2-3 days. About 48km from Mathura, Barsana, Holi is celebrated in the tradtitional style and is known as 'Latthmar Holi' of Barsana. Ram Lila or the story of Lord Ram is enacted with religious fervor every year on Vijaya Dashami in the whole of Uttar Pradesh especially in Ayodhya. Sravan Jhula mela, Bateshwar Fair at Agra and Kampil Fair are also held in Uttar Pradesh. Haridwar is also one of the important places where Kumbh mela.
