Nagaji Fair

Nagaji fair or 'mela' of Madhya Pradesh is popular amongst the tribal people and is a way of paying homage to Saint Nagaji, who lived at the time of Emperor Akbar, nearly 400 years ago. With the onset of the winter season, generally in November or December, the adivasis or tribals congregate at Porsa village in the Murena district. They stay there for about a month and indulge in various communal activities that bring about lot of conviviality and merry making. Various domestic animals traded in the markets form a major draw of this fair.
The Nagaji fair is organized in the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh every year. The festival is celebrated in the winters specifically during the month of November and December. It is said that this festival pays a tribute to great saint Nagaji who lived during the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar. In the earlier days during this festival trade of monkeys use to take place. But now trading of domestic animals is done during the celebration of the festival. A lot of cultural programs are also organized during this time. The tribal culture is exhibited by the celebration of this festival.

Fair and Festivals Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Festival emulates the festive fervour that runs through the veins of India. Bounded by five different states, this land of contrasts has absorbed a little culture and tradition from each, and yet has an identity wholly its own. This aspect is most evident in its festivals. While Madhya Pradesh also celebrates pan-Indian festivals such as Holi, Dussehra, Id and Diwali with fervour, there are several festivals, both religious and cultural, which are exclusive to the state. Considering their sheer number, odds are that tourists will get to participate in or experience at least one while visiting MP.
