Teej Festival

Teej Festival Jaipur is also known as 'the festival of swings'. The festival is celebrated with a lot of fervor in various parts of India. The festival reflects the rich culture and tradition of India. It mainly marks the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival involves a number of religious activities to be performed. Celebration of Teej Festival involves a number of rituals and customs to be performed. Women observe the day by performing a Nirjala Vrat. They perform these rituals to pray for a healthy life for their husband. They pray to the Teej Mata for the well being of their husband. This festival acts as a medium for the women to portray their respect and devotion to their husband. Husbands in return gift them with various items as token of love.

Significance
According to mythology, it was the day when Goddess Parvati reunited with Lord Shiva after a long separation. It is said that whoever worships Parvati on this day, is fortunate enough to get his/her desires fulfilled by her blessings.

Rituals And Celebrations
On this day parents of married women send Sinjara to their daughters, which is a gift pack that includes bindi, vermilion, mehandi or henna, bangles, ghevar (a special Rajasthani sweet) and lahariya (a multi-coloured sari) as a symbol of their covertures. After accepting those gifts sent by her parents, the married ladies adorn themselves with henna, jewels, wear lahariya sari and take delight in the celebrations of this auspicious festival of Teej. Fairs are conducted on this festival; processions are taken out from Tripolia gate of this Pink City Jaipur. Passing through various markets, it ends at Chaugan Stadium. The idol of Goddess Teej (incarnation of Goddess Parvati) is decorated by the royal families of Jaipur, for the fair. Convoy of beautified elephants, horses and camels are made to walk before Goddess Teej's palanquin made of gold and silver. Various folk dances are performed to the tunes of folk songs during this rally.

How is Teej festival celebrated?
Haryali Teej is celebrated on the third day of the Indian lunar month of Shravan, also known as saawan. This falls during the monsoon season which is accompanied by greenery and rain filled clouds. The festival is typically celebrated with festivities, swings, kite flying, folk songs and dance, traditional cooking, gifts, fairs and prayers. Married women wear bright coloured traditional clothes and are presented with gifts, sweets and mehendi by their parents and in-laws. The festival is also dedicated to the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, who is also known as Teej Mata.
